Soon, GCC would be replacing 5 escalators in FOB across Chennai!!
Malfunctioning escalators installed in the FOB or foot over bridges in several localities would be replaced by the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation.
It is learnt that the Highways dept would be replacing malfunctioning escalators in places like MEPZ junction in Tambaram, near Chromepet junction on GST Road, near SBIOA School in Jawahar Nehru Salai, at Velachery near TCS office and at Taramani link near Perungudi MGR Salai link junction. Former CM of TN Dr. J. Jayalalitha was the one who inaugurated these escalators in 2014.
It is learnt that the escalator present in the FOB that connects Chrompet bus stand on the GST Road with the Chromepet railway station has remained non-functional for the last 6 months.` This has created many issues for senior citizens, those with physical issues and pregnant women etc. Those who carry heavy baggage found it tough to climb the staircase and lengthy ramps.
As per Mr. Lion Govindarajan, a social activist it was clear that the issues faced by the common people were not understood by the Highways department officers. He added that the malfunctioning escalator was supposed to be replaced by February 2024 but nothing materialised. He concluded that there would be a protest if the remaining pending work was not completed before 18th of April.
For the last 3 months, the escalator has not been working at Thirumangalam. It was brought out by a resident that after a long day`s work it was very difficult to climb the stairs.
