Parks in Chennai were constructed with the objective of providing relaxation and happiness for the residents. The parks in several localities in Chennai now have become an issue for the residents. Shocking but true!!

The residents of Chennai have been demanding for better maintenance of parks. In this scenario, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would renovate 300 parks present in Chennai. For this, an amount of Rs 13 cr would be spent.

A common problem that is present in the parks is the lack of cleaning. The footpaths have been damaged and lawns are littered with garbage and dry leaves etc. The broken structures in the parks must be replaced and the play areas for the kids must be safe. The residents want GCC to take action regarding these.

My Lady Park:

It was brought out by a resident from Periamet that My lady park in Ward 58 (Royapuram) is one of the oldest parks in Chennai and is located 1km from the GCC building. In this park, many old films featuring leading actors like MGR and Jaishankar have been shot. He explained how the growth of grass goes unchecked and how it enables mosquitoes breeding. Truth is that it is tough for the residents at this park due to mosquito menace.

Thiruvengada Nagar Park:

In ward 81 (Ambattur) is present Thiruvengada Nagar park. Many people from about 8km also come to this park to relax. It is sad to note that all the seesaws, swings and slides are broken in the park and the officials of GCC have not taken any action despite many complaints. The plants present in the park have not been cleaned by the workers for the past few days. This was mentioned by a member of the United Welfare Association.

It was revealed by a senior officer from GCC that 300 parks in Chennai have been identified for repairing or renovation works. He spoke about how the cost of renovation was Rs 13 crores. The tender process has been going on now and public grievances regarding cleaning and broken equipment in the play area would be addressed soon.
