While the government is eyeing on making all sorts of transactions cashless, the Tamil Nadu government is ardent about introducing smart cards which will be of multiple purposes. This is to be introduced in Chennai city so as to enable all sorts of payments like bus fare, electricity bill, corporation levied taxes and more to me made through the card.

On Wednesday, the minister for municipal administrations and rural development, SP Velumani had announced regarding the proposed smart card after two days long debate about the need for grants to the department.

Chennaites can make use of the smart card for paying bus fare on vehicles that are functional by metro transports, make power bill payments or drinking water or sewage connection charges, he said during the assembly.

Furthermore, the card can also be used to pay property tax and profession tax that are imposed by the Corporation, he added.

In Pondy Bazar on Thyagaraya Road in T. Nagar, it is likely that a Rs 20 crore worth pedestrian plaza will be erected under the Smart City project. This will include contemporary facilities like broad platform, median, separate lanes to 2-wheelers, buses and battery cars, people will have chairs to relax, there will be modern toilets, safe drinking water and first aid centres as well.
