Established in the year 1974 in Tuticorin in the state of Tamil Nadu, VO. Chidambaranar or VOC port or Tuticorin port is famous for being the second biggest port in Tamil Nadu. Spread over a land area of 2150 acres this VOC port is one of the 12 major ports in our country. Mr S. Natarajan is the current vice-chairman of this VOC port trust. It is interesting to mention that this VOC or Tuticorin port is the one and only port in south India that provides direct weekly container service to United States of America.
The latest news is passenger ship services between Tuticorin and other neighbouring districts and between Tuticorin and Thiruvananthapuram would be launched and this would be done in the next 3 months of time. Mr S Natarajan spoke about how small passenger ships could be used for the services. It is now revealed that passenger ship movement from this Tuticorin port trust would be tremendous and Ministry of shipping has initiated the services.
Mr S. Natarajan also shared his thoughts on how in the first phase private shipping companies and operators were asked to show interest to operate from this VOC port trust to Ramesawaram and from VOC port trust to Kanyakumari and Trivandrum etc.
It is important to note that seating capacity, price of tickets, routes etc would be known only after a meeting by port trust management staffs and private companies that show interest to operate from this VOC port of Tuticorin take place. This interactive meeting would be held between 20th January and 25th January 2018.
Basic and specific requirements of the private companies at the point of starting and destination would be known at the meeting and this was confirmed by the vice-chairman. It must be noted that at the VOC port trust, from the fifth and sixth berths passenger ship services could be operated.
Basic infrastructure that is needed to anchor small ships would be present in places like Rameswaram, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and in Trivandrum in the state of Kerala. There would also be few discussions between the port trust and the department of tourism belonging to the states of TN and Kerala regarding this basic infrastructure.
It is well known that trips to Vivekanada Rock and Thiruvalluvar Statue in Kanyakumari are the only options for the tourists now. It is now said that these services would help in the tourism aspect plus it would be beneficial for the traders also.
