The Chennai-Salem green corridor is in legal issue now is known. The latest news that has come out is the union government has proposed for second green field corridor between Chennai and Trichy. This corridor would be constructed under the ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana phase-2. The point is by this upcoming Greenfield corridor Pillayarpatti and Tuticorin would be linked. It must be taken into account that NHAI or National Highway Authority of India recently invited consultants to prepare detailed project reports or DPR for the development of expressways, economic corridors and inter-corridors under phase-2 for about a distance of 6747 km across India.
For the submission of bids for the consultants for the project, 31st of January is the last day. Only after the study, the extent of land to be acquired would be known. According to an official it is clear that technical, economic and financial viability is very important and reports would be prepared for the development of economic corridors, inter-corridors, feeder routes etc. It is revealed that the Chennai-Trichy expressway would be 310 km long and the Pillayarpatti-Tuticorin corridor would be 160 km long. It is known that NHAI has already taken up land acquisition for the four-laning of Thanjavur-Pillayarpatti road for 82 km to link NH45B at Melur. The important piece of information is preparation of DPR has started and in the month of September the executive agency had issued notification announcing its intention to acquire lands.
It was pointed out by the official sources that the job of consultant would be involving in public consultation with communities along the routes, NGOs working in that place, stakeholders and government departments at all the stages of assignment. The project report must have technical, economic and financial viability of the project.
Mr. Pon. Radhakrishnan, union minister, spoke about how the construction of green corridor would be superb in reducing the travel time plus in avoiding many accidents. He shed light on the huge congestion on the NH7 connecting Kanyakumari and said there was need to widen the stretches at Chengalpet and Tindivanam. He finally highlighted that BJP government is doing its best to create better infrastructure.
