Chennai’s Transport Minister SS Sivasankar launched a new Rs 2000 ‘Travel As You Please Ticket’ (TAYPT) bus pass, allowing passengers unlimited travel on AC and electric buses operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).
Key Highlights:
- The existing Rs 1000 TAYPT pass remains available for non-AC buses.
- MTC currently operates 50 AC buses and plans to add 625 electric buses by year-end.
- 500 electric buses (including 100 AC ones) are being procured via a World Bank-funded project.
- Another 600 electric buses (including 400 AC ones) are in the tender phase under the KfW-funded program.
- Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore will receive 500 electric buses, with MTC getting 320 AC ones.
- Overall, 1,420 electric buses, including 820 AC electric buses, will be added to the fleet.
The Rs 2000 pass aims to improve travel convenience while supporting Chennai’s transition to eco-friendly public transport.
