The Chennai Corporation Budget for the financial year 2025-26 was presented today by Chennai Corporation Mayor Priya. Several new initiatives and developments have been announced across various sectors, including public health, education, sanitation, and infrastructure.
Key Announcements
Public Health & Animal Welfare
- 1.80 lakh street dogs will be vaccinated against rabies and dewormed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board.
- AC facilities will be installed in all Chennai Corporation health centers for medicine storage rooms.
- Lift facilities will be provided in 22 newly constructed primary health centers.
- Pet hospitals will be established in addition to dog control centers in 10 zones.
- A pet burial ground will be set up at the Moolakottalam cemetery in North Chennai.
- 19 fogger machines will be procured for hospitals and maternity centers.
Education & Student Welfare
- 2,300 classrooms in middle, high, and higher secondary schools will receive globes at an estimated cost of ₹39.10 lakhs.
- ₹500 per day will be provided as a travel and food allowance for students participating in zonal, district, and state-level competitions.
- 414 kindergarten classrooms will receive ₹40,000 for electronic boards displaying lessons, songs, and stories.
- LKG and UKG classrooms in 100 schools will be upgraded with wall paintings, illustrations, and colorful furniture.
Sanitation & Waste Management
- 20 new vehicles will be purchased to clean roads and remove debris.
- 400 additional surveillance cameras will be installed to monitor garbage collection.
Digital Transformation & Tax Collection
- A new QR Code system will be introduced for property tax assessment, business tax, and license renewals.
- QR codes will be installed in corporation-owned commercial shops for tenants to pay rent and GST online.
Urban Development & Infrastructure
- A digital smart parking facility will be introduced via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
- Two new food courts with basic facilities and hygiene standards will be set up.
- 70 parks will have covered reading zones with seating.
- 10 large parks will be developed with inclusive facilities for all visitors, including special children.
Sports Development
- Two indoor badminton courts will be set up at Sadayankuppam and Burma Nagar to promote sports in North Chennai.
