Early intervention programme for differently abled kids in TN

For the sake of improving their long term function, the Tamil Nadu government would implement a state-level early intervention programme for the differently able kids. This was as per Mr S. Sankara Raman of Amar Seva Sangam. This Amar Seva Sangam is an NGO and it has been working in the field of disability services and advocacy is known.

In Tirunelveli in TN, the above said NGO has been involved in the improvement of long term functions of differently able kids. Mr Sankara Raman released performance analysis report on the work done by this NGO in certain blocks of Tirunelveli. It is worthy to note that the programme uses community and family participation models and software that could be used to monitor the progress of kids with various developmental issues.

As many as 1252 differently able children were identified and the early intervention programmes were given to these kids. The point is there has been an improvement in the kids ‘Functional Independent Measure’ and ‘Gross Motor Function Measure’. There has been significant improvement in the attendance of these kids (85%) in their schools also.

Over 50,000 children below the age of 6 were screened by this NGO and 3000 Anganwadi workers, nurses and community rehabilitation workers belonging to Tiruunelveli were sensitised on early intervention. This was according to a statement from the organisation. Information is as many as 679 kids were referred for surgery.

For the year 2020, the TN government had agreed to fund the expansion of the project in 3 districts like Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thothukudi.
