The Highways Department is set to construct an overbridge for pedestrians with escalator facility linking GST Road with Tambaram Railway Station at a cost of Rs. 20 Crores.
The activities on this project will commence shortly. Tambaram is one of the most important entry points to reach Chennai Metro. It is the main railway station linking all the trains towards the Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu. Several long-distance buses also ply via Tambaram to other places from Chennai.
Apart from this, as a developing suburban area with many industries coming up and also many constructions in progress, Tambaram remains a much crowded place of activities.
However, even as these developments are progressing, other amenities like wider roads are not available - most of the roads remain narrow. This causes heavy traffic congestion. The waiting periods for the vehicles tend to be longer. Because of the pedestrians find it especially difficult during the peak hours of traffic to cross the roads.
When enquiring the officials from the Highways Department, they explained that over-bridges with escalator facilities are being constructed in several places in the Chennai Metro City.
Such facility is already available in 5 locations in the city. In this scenario, plans are afoot to construct an overbridge with escalator facility in Tambaram as well. The Overbridge will be provided with 4 escalators on either side.
The facility will be shortly provided to facilitate reaching Tambaram Railway Station directly from GST Road. The Highways Department will be jointly working with the Railways in this project. The initial activities for this project is already started. The tenders for the project will be floated in a few weeks. The tenders will be reviewed and finalised in a quick period to commence the project in a few weeks.
