At an estimated cost of Rs 2.55 cr, the Chennai Corporation would be setting up a pond on the important Ennore High Road at Tondiarpet in north Chennai. The objective behind this would be to avoid water stagnation during monsoons. It is worth noting that many residents and ward members have given complaints regarding the water stagnation in the past. During the rains, the pond would store excess water and prevent water stagnation here.

According to Mr. Nethaji Ganesh councillor of ward 38, an industry used to keep its pipes near the water body in the past. As a result, there was inundation due to improper maintenance and overgrown vegetation etc mostly in the rainy monsoon seasons. He concluded that many petitions were filed to convert the existing water body into a pond.

A request was made by the Chennai Corporation to Southern Railways or SR regarding converting the water body into a pond. Point is that once the work starts here the encroachments near the water body would be removed and space would be extended to create a pond.

In each monsoon season, high levels of water stagnation were witnessed here. Not only that, many two wheelers have skidded and fallen into the water body also.

It was later brought out by a resident from Karunanidhi Nagar in Tondiarpet that even after moderate rains the entire stretch would get inundated. He added that after 2 or 3 days only, water would drain. He was happy that the water body would be converted into a pond as it would prevent water stagnation in the locality.

Maintaining the pond would be very important and GCC must ensure that it gets de-silted and overgrown vegetation gets removed regularly. If not maintained well, then the purpose of turning the water body into a pond would become useless.

In July 2024, the civic body received no objection certificate from SR to create a pond at Karunanidhi Nagar, Tondiarpet on the Ennore High Road. This was as per an official from GCC. He added that work to convert the water body into a pond would begin soon.
