Right from the day of launch of Goods and Services Tax, people from all corners are protesting against the exorbitant tax rates. Recently, they are experiencing a new problem with the latest addition to the GST issues which is 5 percent tax towards all air conditioned MTC buses, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and by other private players.

The ticket fares are of the range Rs 15 to 100 for which Re 1 to Rs 5 will be charged as tax. The commuters are irked by this because the tickets that are already pricey have got furthermore costlier. The ticket rates are put under the 5 percent slab. However, often times, the tax levied is 6 to 7 percent. For ticket of Rs 50, the tax is Rs 3 which is 6 percent of the ticket rate, says a commuter.

An activist says, as per GO, the price per kilometer is Rs 1.10 for AC buses. When the price comes to in decimal, charges for next integer is quoted. Hence, the rate is already hiked and it further gets doubled due to GST.

As we pay tax, citizens have all the right to question against bus maintenance, bus depots, seating facility and drinking water all of which are insufficient in the city.
