Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: Tamil Nadu Stretch Delayed, Completion Expected by Year-End

The Tamil Nadu section of the 262-km Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, originally set for completion by August 2025, is facing delays due to monsoon rains, utility shifting issues, borrow area approvals, and financial constraints. The project is now expected to be completed only by the end of the year.

According to a progress report shared by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the Lok Sabha, the 106-km greenfield expressway in Tamil Nadu is being built in four packages:

🔹 Gudipala (AP) - Walajahpet
🔹 Walajahpet - Arakkonam (90% completed, expected by July)
🔹 Arakkonam - Kancheepuram (slowest at 52% due to financial and land compensation issues, expected by year-end)
🔹 Kancheepuram - Sriperumbudur (expected by September)

The fully access-controlled expressway begins at Hosakote, Bengaluru, and ends at Sriperumbudur, passing through Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. While the Karnataka section is complete, delays persist in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Initially built as a four-lane expressway, it will be expanded to six or eight lanes as traffic increases. Designed for a speed of 120 km/h, the expressway aims to significantly cut travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai.
