The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is drafting the Third Master Plan (TMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), covering 5,904 sq km. As part of this plan, nine key growth centres have been identified for strategic development.
Key Development Plans:
Parandur: To be developed as an aerotropolis with business hubs, cargo facilities, and hotels around the proposed airport.
Minjur: Will serve as an industrial and port hub supporting Ennore Port with warehouses and freight movement.
Thirumazhisai: To be transformed into an innovation city focusing on technology and research.
Sriperumbudur: Planned as an industrial cluster to boost manufacturing.
Kancheepuram: Will highlight heritage and cultural development.
Maraimalai Nagar: Set to become a manufacturing hub.
Chengalpattu: Identified as a key urban centre.
Mahabalipuram: Will be developed as a tourism and recreation city.
CMDA aims to ensure balanced regional development and sustainable urbanisation through these initiatives, using new town development plans to drive economic growth and improve infrastructure.
