Shows cancelled in Chennai theatres due to dip in bookings

Due to heavy downpour of rain, there is substantial drop in bookings in cinema halls and multiplexes in Chennai since the beginning of this week. In fact, a few theatres in southern Chennai cancelled night shows.

Rohini Theatre owner, R Panneerselvam says there was heavy dip in bookings. Since beginning of this week, there have been almost 40 percent reduced bookings and the theatre occupancy was hardly 20 percent on Thursday night owing to heavy rain.

He says, just 40 percent bookings were observed for Friday, and the advance bookings is not begun yet.

Generally, for Friday and Saturday night shows for new release movies, the theatre will be tightly packed. There will also be good bookings for morning and evening shows for Monday. This weekend has however proven wrong and different, as the ticket bookings are very conservative for Friday bookings this weekend. Last minute bookings for weekend are looked forward to, but we have the fingers crossed, he further adds.

The founder of one of the leading online ticket booking platforms says this is not a typical Friday. With the weather conditions getting better, it is likely that the bookings will gather momentum. Owing to rainfall, there was significant drop in bookings for Thursday and Friday, and the weekend bookings are expected to increase if the weather condition improves.

After the release of Vijay starrer Mersal, there is no big release. This is yet another factor for dip in bookings, he says.
