Queen Marys College Students Join Rotary for Beach Cleanup on Plastic Bag-Free Day!

In a remarkable display of environmental commitment, over 300 college students from Queen Mary`s College joined forces with Rotary International District 3234 for a large-scale beach cleaning drive. The event, held at Foreshore Estate`s Vinayaka Idol Immersion Point, coincided with International Plastic Bag-Free Day.

The initiative, which began at 7:30 AM, saw enthusiastic participation from students, working alongside Rotary members to rid the beach of plastic waste and other debris. Participants took an oath to stop using single-use plastic bags and instead switch to cloth bags.

T. Vivekanandan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mylapore, graced the event and commended the students` efforts. "This kind of community engagement is crucial for maintaining our city`s cleanliness and protecting our marine ecosystem," he stated.

Ann. Bharathi Saravanan, First Lady of RI District 3234, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. "Today`s event not only cleaned our beach but also raised awareness about the harmful effects of plastic bags on our environment," she said.

As the event concluded, participants had collected several kilograms of waste, significantly improving the beach`s condition. This successful event underscores the power of community collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, setting a positive example for future conservation efforts in Chennai.
