Chennai and traffic congestion go hand in hand!!
The motorists as well as the common public often find it tough to navigate along the roads in Chennai due to heavy traffic congestion is a well known fact. In this scenario, the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has started the survey of congested roads. The main objective behind this would be to widen the roads for smooth traffic flow.
To discuss about the road widening works, yesterday, 12th July, a meeting took place between GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, CMDA member secretary Mr. Anshul Mishra and other officials from CMDA etc. According to an official from GCC, in the first phase 4 roads would be widened in Chennai.
Point to be noted is that Radhakrishnan Salai would be widened to 30.5m and by this heavy traffic congestion present in the localities like Mylapore, Royapettah, Thousand lights and Teynampet etc would get eased.
Preparation of and plan schedule:
In the next step, a land plan schedule for more stretches in Chennai would be prepared and more roads would be widened. It is worth noting that the width of Lattice Bridge Road would be increased to 30.5m. In the same way, the width of Paper Mills Road and New Avadi Road etc would be increased to 18m.
It is surprising to mention here that out of all the congested roads in Chennai, Paper Mills Roads has got the maximum number of encroachments. Truth is that because of the encroachments this road has got a width around only 12m at most places.
Former CMDA chief planner Mr. K. Kumar spoke about how issues during widening work would come out especially on Paper Mills Road. He added that land acquisition in this road would take a long duration due to the presence of multiple owners.
