The life of a 32 year old was saved, thanks to the huge efforts of MIOT Hospitals in Chennai.
An across blood group (ABO-incompatible) liver transplant which is a risky and rare surgical procedure was performed on a 32 yr old patient.
It is worth mentioning that this patient named Premnath from Mettupalayam has been suffering from acute on-chronic liver failure and bile duct disease. That is scarring in the tubes that carry bile from liver to small intestine. The patient needed a liver transplant.
Point is that due to the waiting time, decompensation and absence of a compatible blood group living donor the bile disease increased the risk of a transplant. In such a difficult scenario, MIOT Hospital’s team overcame the associated risk of bile duct disease and complexities of blood group mismatch etc. The hospital team completed ABO incompatible liver transplantation.
Bitter fact is that ABO incompatible transplants are usually more resource intensive and expensive as it requires specialised medications and protocols to reduce organ rejection risks.
Under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme, the surgery was done for the 32 yr old patient in a cost effective manner.
For the last one and half years, the patient has been suffering from abdominal and leg swelling and was finding it very tough. Point is that he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and later was confirmed to have liver failure and was advised to undergo liver transplant from a Coimbatore based private hospital.
