The recent notifications given by the government after one year for recruiting new staff to fill existing vacancies have made forest, public and health department, and the secretariat to relax. However, this announcement did not bring any sign of recruitment in Chennai metro water and Chennai Corporation, which are actually facing shortage of enough staff from last three years, in spite of the expansion of the city.
The civic body is recruiting more staff and the insiders admit that they have outsourced about 30% of civic workers to ensure that the existing vacancies do not disturb the administration.
Currently, the Chennai Corporation requires about 500 staff at executive levels and 10,000 sanitary workers for routine cleaning works and other works like monitoring lodges, restaurants, hospitals and burial grounds. However, the secretary of Chennai Managaratchi Anaithu Uzhiyar Sangam said although there are currently no proposals pending, the recruitment is still going on compassionate grounds.
The situation is said to be worst with Chennai Metro water, as they need at least 4000 Group D workers to clear sewer blocks and handle complaints with water supply. But the scenario is quite convincing with Health, forests, transportation, family welfare and school departments.
