Metro Rail to begin operations by October

Metro Rail Project has been taken up in order to reduce the traffic congestion in Chennai. The project cost is Rs, 14, 600 Crores. Work is progressing at 2 corridors for a total distance of 45 km. 

The trains are procured from Alstom, Brazil. 42 trains with 4 caches each will cost Rs. 1471 Crores.9trains will be manufactured at Brazil and the balance 33 from Tada, Andhra Pradesh.7 trains have been shipped from Brazil and already arrived at Chennai. 2 trains have been dispatched frm Sri City, Andhra Pradesh ad reached Chennai. 

Koyambedu workshop is bustling with action. Test runs fr the 9 trains is in progress..It is planned to operate trains between Koyambedu & Alandur from October. The required quota of trains will be available in 1 or 2 months. Final testing is in progress in the elevated corridor track between Koyambedu & Ashok Nagar. 

Trains will be controlled from the control room at Koyambedu. Checking of the operation of the signals, running of the train stopping & starting from the 7 stations between Koyambedu & Alandur is planned shortly. The section between Ashok Nagar & Koyambedu has been tested successfully.

The work progress was delayed to due to some problems with the contractors at the stations of Vadapalani, Alandur, Guindy, and Ashok Nagar. New contractors have been appointed and work has continued.

The work is expected to be completed by the 2nd week of October instead of July/August as originally planned.

Operation of trains is expected from the 2nd week of October.
