Chennai Metro Rail : 2 types of tickets for travel – Tokens & smart cards – No season tickets

There will be no season tickets with concession in the Metro Rail system.

2 types of tickets, smart cards and tokens would be used.

Metro Rail Services are set to begin in end October or early November. Activities are under full swing to meet this schedule.

Test runs are being conducted on the double track in the section between Koyambedu & Alandur.

The minimum fare is set at Rs. 10/-. The further fares will be in steps of 5, that is, Rs. 15, 20, 25, etc. Tokens and smart cards will be used as tickets. It is also known that there would be no season tickets.

‘Token’ would be used as ‘1 trip; ticket. The passenger can buy the token at the Metro Station and will have to swipe it at the entrance in the train when the doors will be open. for travel. While getting down at the destination, the passenger can drop the token at the gate which will automatically open the exit door.  Tokens cannot be carried away.

Smart cards can be bought at pre-fixed rates. A person can buy a smart cards, say, at Rs. 200/-. When entering the Metro station, the passenger can swipe this cards at the ‘Automatic Fare Collection’ machine at the entrance. and get into the metro train. While getting down t the destination station, the passenger has to wipe the smart card at the AFC machine in the station and exit. The fare for the travel will automatically be deducted from the smart card through the special software.

It is planned that the use of this smart card may be extended to other services such as city MTC buses and other suburban train routes. Discussions are being held with the Managing Director of MTC and Southern Railway Commercial Manager.
