Madras High Court Dismisses Madras Gymkhana Club’s Plea Over Guindy Golf Course

The Madras High Court dismissed the Madras Gymkhana Club`s (MGC) plea to restrain the State from taking over or causing further damage to the Guindy golf course, citing lack of possession rights.

Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy ruled that since MGC is neither the original lessee nor in possession of the land, no prior notice was required for the State to reclaim it.

MGC alleged that on October 4, 2024, government officials entered the premises with earth movers, digging a trench at the entrance, causing damages worth ₹50 lakh. They contended that they had maintained the golf course for 147 years and sought to maintain status quo.

However, the Additional Advocate General (AAG) J Ravindran and Special Government Pleader A Selvendran argued that the land was originally leased to the Madras Race Club, whose lease had been terminated, making MGC’s claim untenable. The court ultimately dismissed the petition.
