The pedestrian traffic has been on the rise in Chennai is a well known fact. It is now brought out that the foot over bridge or FOB that has been planned near the famous Semmozhi Poonga in Chennai has been put on hold. Semmozhi Poonga was opened in the year 2010 and it is the first botanical garden in Chennai.

The US Consulate is located nearby the Semmozhi Poonga is known. Point is that due to security concerns the FOB project here (to be constructed by the GCC to improve pedestrian safety) has been put on hold.

The residents as well as local representatives have been demanding FOB in highly congested places like Cathedral Road, Mettupalayam Junction and near educational institutions like Sri Bhaktavatsalam Memorial College for Women in Korattur etc. It is noteworthy that the development of these projects continues to remain slow because GCC hasn`t initiated any construction in these places

Nightmarish traffic conditions present:

The nightmarish traffic conditions present now have been creating many issues for the locals and motorists etc due to more people visiting the public institutions every day. As a result, locals and motorists have expressed their issues over this.

The need for the hour is better pedestrian infrastructure to ensure safety and this has been requested by the residents belonging to Stephenson Road and Ambattur Industrial Estate etc.

Though the TN government has announced an amount of Rs 9.35 cr cable-stayed skywalk connecting 2 phases of Tholkappia Poonga but other projects are pending. There have been some complaints from the residents that apart from not improving the situation the present infrastructure is also ignored.

For about 2 years, the escalators at the Anna Nagar sixth avenue foot over bridge have been non operational. This is due to non-payment of electricity bills. In the same way a FOB from Chintadripet to Chennai Central metro station has been non-operational for months. It is learnt that the residents have requested the authorities to take steps to ensure pedestrian safety and to manage traffic in a better way.
