RBI Reports 97.96% Return of Rs 2,000 Notes; Rs 7,261 Crore Still in Public Hands!

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 97.96% of the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes withdrawn from circulation have been returned. As of August 30, 2024, Rs 7,261 crore worth of these notes remain in public hands, down from Rs 3.56 lakh crore when the withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023.

The deposit and exchange facility for these notes was available at all bank branches until October 7, 2023. Since then, they can be deposited at RBI issue offices or sent via India Post to these offices for account credit.

The Rs 2,000 notes, introduced in November 2016 after the demonetization of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes, are accepted at 19 RBI offices across major cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and New Delhi.
