Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) is gearing up to address the parking space crunch faced by regular commuters at several metro stations. With an influx of passengers on metro trains, the current parking facilities are falling short, particularly during peak hours.
To tackle this issue, CMRL is planning to hike parking charges for non-commuters who utilize metro station parking lots. This move aims to prioritize parking availability for regular metro users who rely on the service for their daily commute.
Officials from CMRL highlighted that the parking areas of many metro stations are often occupied by non-passengers, leading to a scarcity of space for regular commuters. Factors such as vehicle safety and lower parking fees incentivize non-commuters to use metro station parking lots.
Popular metro stations like Chennai Airport, Meenambakkam, Anna Nagar Tower, Tirumangalam, and Nanganallur witness high demand for parking spots, especially during office hours. As a solution, CMRL intends to implement variable parking charge increases based on passenger demand and station traffic.
The proposed increase in parking fees for non-commuters is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, with the ultimate goal of ensuring convenient parking access for regular metro rail users.
