It is revealed that the lives of the commuters have become miserable now due to the delay in the construction of the flyover at Koyambedu. The traffic scenario along the Jawaharlal Nehru Road/ Inner Ring Road has worsened due to the new traffic arrangement.
It must be noted that the city bound buses were not allowed to take right turn at the traffic signal to enter the CMBT through main entrance. These buses were forced to take U turn near the EC office and join the north bound vehicles near the statue of late former chief minister of TN, M. Karunanidhi. Then the buses were made to take left to enter the CMBT.
It is well known that the stretch from Vadapalani towards Thirumamangalam is very busy and now this stretch has to accommodate the buses that are diverted. This has lead to both lanes getting highly congested for 24 hours of time. A resident belonging to K.K. Nagar who takes this road to reach his office located at Padi spoke about how it takes almost 30 to 45 minutes to cross the stretch between Thirumangalam and Salem RR. Biriyani located on the main road.
It was mentioned by a traffic policeman that they were trying their best to bring the situation under control but the width of the road of 9 m was challenging. The traffic congestion is mainly due to the delay in the construction of the 1.09 km long grade separator in the stretch having an average of 1.5 lakhs vehicles plying.
In the year 2015 the project was launched at an estimated cost of Rs 33 crores and was supposed to be completed in 33 months of time. Now even after 4 years, the construction work is still in progress. Many factors that caused delay were demonetization, M-sand issue and recently approval from the traffic police. This was as per an official belonging to the department of state highways. It was brought out by the official that in the nights, only concreting was allowed to be carried out and in the day time only barriers or scaffolding related works was carried out.
