Commissioner K. Prakash informed that the groundwater level has risen by 2.44 metres in the last 4 months in the areas under the domain of the Chennai Metro City Corporations.
A review meeting was conducted led by the Chennai Metro City Corporation Commissioner and CMWSSB (Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board) Managing Director T. N. Hariharan on Saturday (23rd November) at the Ripon buildings along with the Chennai Metro Corporation and CMWSSB officials regarding the progress of activities on rainwater harvesting in all the houses, government buildings, private sector buildings, and factories.
While addressing the gathering, the commissioner informed:
Several activities have been initiated to renovate the various water resources in the areas under the domain of the Chennai Metro City Corporation and also setting up rainwater collection arrangement in all the constructions. Until today, the review has been undertaken regarding the availability of the rainwater harvesting system in 314932 constructions. Out of this, rainwater harvesting arrangement is good and functioning in 240019 constructions.
In 26040 constructions, minor maintenance activities are to be undertaken for a proper rainwater harvesting system. 39385 rainwater harvesting systems are newly constructed.
Further, there are 385 unused society wells in areas under the jurisdiction of the Chennai Metro City Corporation, Desilting has been completed in these wells.
With the completion of the above activities, the groundwater level which was 7.298 metres has risen by 4.84 metres.’
