To ensure safe and accident-free New Year celebrations, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have implemented preventive measures, including traffic diversions and parking arrangements, particularly around Marina and Elliots beaches. These measures are set to manage the expected large crowds and maintain road safety during the festivities.
Flyover Closures
As a precaution, 23 flyovers within the Chennai Police limits will remain closed from 8 PM on December 31 to 6 AM on January 1.
Traffic Diversions
Near Marina Beach
- Foreshore Service Road: Closed for traffic from 7 PM on December 31 to 6 AM on January 1. No parking will be allowed on this road, and vehicles will exit only through Lighthouse Junction.
Kamarajar Salai
- War Memorial to Lighthouse: Closed for vehicular traffic from 8 PM on December 31 to 6 AM on January 1.
- Vehicles from Adyar will be diverted at Greenways Road to Mandaveli, R A Puram, and Luz to reach their destinations.
- Vehicles from Dr RK Salai will be diverted at VM Street to RK Mutt Road, Luz, and Mandaveli.
- Vehicles from Parry’s will be diverted at RBI Subway to North Fort Wall Road and Anna Salai.
- The Loop Road from South Canal Bank Road to Lighthouse Junction will be closed as needed.
Besant Nagar
- 6th Avenue: No vehicle entry from 8 PM on December 31 to 6 AM on January 1. Roads leading to Annai Velankanni Church will also be blocked.
Flag Staff Road
- No vehicles will be allowed from Wallajah Point toward War Memorial from 8 PM.
MTC Bus Diversions
- Northbound buses from Greenways Point will be diverted via RK Mutt Road and Nageshwara Park.
- Southbound buses will be rerouted at RBI North to Wallajah Point through Anna Salai and Luz Junction.
Parking Arrangements
Special parking facilities will be available in key areas, including:
- Swami Sivananda Salai: Single-line parking from Doordarshan Kendra to Periyar Statue.
- Wallajah Road: Near the Tamil Nadu State Guest House to Anna Statue.
- Island Ground, PWD Ground, and Press Club Road.
- Bharathi Salai: Near Victoria Hotel Road.
- Lloyds Road: Near the Office of the Commissioner for Differently Abled.
- Educational Campuses: Queen Mary’s College, Lady Wellington School, and NKT School.
- Dr Besant Road: Near MRTS towards Ice House.
- Besant Nagar: Olcott Road and avenue roads.
Monitoring and Safety
The police will utilise ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) and CCTV cameras to detect violations. Revellers are advised to avoid dangerous driving and adhere to the regulations for a safe New Year’s Eve.
