The Avadi Corporation, established in 2019 with an area of 65 sq km, will expand nearly threefold to 181.82 sq km, according to a government order from the municipal administration. This expansion will incorporate the three municipalities of Poonamalle, Tiruverkadu, and Tirunindravur, along with 17 adjacent village panchayats including Karunakaracheri, Nadukuthagai, Nemilicherry, Morai, Palavedu, Vellanur, Ayappakkam, Kattupakkam, Kannapalayam, Sorancheri, Banaveduthottam, Senneerkuppam, Nazarathpettai, Parivakkam, Varadarajapuram, Agaramel, and Meppur.
The GO highlights key landmarks in these areas, including the 100-year-old Arinagar Anna Boys` High School in Poonamalle, where the Chennai Metro Rail service is set to launch in 2026, and the famous Mariamman Temple in Tiruverkadu. Additionally, the Bhaktavachala Perumal Temple in Tiruninravur, a notable Vaishnava shrine, is part of the region.
The Outer Ring Road connecting Poonamalle, Tiruninravur, Morai, and Vellanur will further enhance connectivity. The merger of these 20 local bodies with Avadi Corporation is expected to significantly improve the standard of living and basic facilities for the people in these areas.
