How to travel from Chennai to Ooty?

The total distance between Chennai and Ooty is 534km through roadways and 88km by airways. The closest domestic airport to travel to Ooty is Coimbatore airport and this enjoys good connectivity with the other cities. And the nearest railway station is the Mettupalayam which lies at 40km distance from Ooty.

How about air travel?

As mentioned above, Oooty is 88km distant from Chennai with Coimbatore being the closest domestic airport. You may rather choose to travel from Bangalore which lies at 295km distance. Furthermore, there are good flow of flights from the other parts of the city like Mumbai, Delhi or others. As you reach the airport, there will be many buses and taxis to travel to Ooty.

Travel by bus

There are private as well as government bus facilities available to travel between Ooty and Chennai. Also, there are bus facilities from Bengaluru or Mysore to Ooty. If you opt for overnight bus travel, it will be convenient so that you do not get tired with travelling. Generally, the special government buses will leave anywhere between 5pm and 7pm. The total travel duration is 6 hours.

Travel by train

Train travel is of course easy and quick and still affordable. There are several trains like the Udagamandalam passenger train or the Mettupalayam Udagamandalam passenger train, Mangalore express, etc. There are also Nilgiri mountain trains which are the heritage trains. In this train, you will enjoy exciting journey uphill. Alternatively, the better option is to get a cab booked for you from the railway junction.

It is to ben noted that between Coimbatore and Ooty, there is no direct connectivity of train or bus. Picking a Tata indica car is the ideal option to journey between the two places. And from Coimbatore to Ooty, you may opt for Nilgiri Express.

You can travel through the blissful ooty roads all by yourself passing through the reserve forest areas alongside stunning sceneries which will give you a totally new experience. It will excite you with newer experiences. Go on and travel from Bengaluru to Ooty in two different ways. One from Mysore or Chamarajanagar down to Gundlupet and then to the forest region via Bandipur National Park and then reach Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary.
