Chennai Corporation is facing a critical situation as it is likely to lose funds allotted for it towards construction of storm water draining system under Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission. In case of failure to meet the deadline by 31st March, the corporation may face fund loss. Initially, the deadline given for completion of the project was December 2012, but the corporation couldn’t meet the deadline and took extra time of more than one year.
The civic body did cut short the overall project volume from 533.32 km to 355 km, because of metro rail works which may have impediments on construction of drainage system or other hurdling factors like delay in approval from traffic police. These called off areas include Anna Salai, South boag road, E V R Periyar Salai and Anna Nagar Third Avenue.
As of now, over 80 per cent of the work is completed at an estimated price of Rs 436 crore. During a recent discussion, the ministry warned if the project is not completed within 31st March 2014, further allotment of funds will be cancelled.
