As per the plan of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on commencing the extensive secondary runway sooner within 10 days, planes will turn turtle on top of the country’s foremost runway bridge in Chennai.
Both the bridge across the Adayar River and the runway got the respective consent from the Directorate General of the Civil Aviation.
Hence this second runway in the Chennai airport will increase the flight handling rate from 27 per hour to more than 40, aviation experts stated.
As per the new plan, the flights have been decided to cross the touch point from the Manapakkam region. It wraps two purposes:
• Facilitate safe barrier zone at the closing stages of the runway
• DGCA`s disinclination to seize risk on the bridge
The common length of the runway has been descent to 240 meters in order to follow the runway safety norms and to afford ample buffer.
Airlines will be highly benefited from these two functional runways, as there is no need for the flights to get cancelled or deferred for the four-hour shutting of the main runway every week for maintenance. Also synchronized landing and take-off will be taken care.
Putting in the runway lights is still awaiting and until that work is accomplished, night operations will be limited, said an AAI official.
