Chennaites will have to face the worst temperature in the coming days. The maximum temperature in the city on Friday afternoon soared to 36.1 degrees Celsius, around two degrees more than on Thursday. Along with the 36.1 degrees Celsius recorded at the airport weather station in Meenambakkam, it was the highest recorded so far this month.
Met department officials say it will be some time before there is a constant increase in the temperature. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was only around 32 degrees, but it went up by 2 degrees on Thursday. It is possible the temperature will drop once again, said Y E A Raj, deputy director general of India Meteorological Department (IMD)in Chennai.
On Friday last, the maximum temperature touched 35 degrees Celsius, but dropped to 34 degrees C and then to 33 degrees during the next couple of days, according to data from the weather department.
The increase in the temperature on Friday was due to clear skies and weaker wind speed, said Raj. We will continue to have varying temperatures for some time and well have moderate weather till mid-April.
