Aiming to reduce the mosquito menace, the city corporation has started removing water hyacinth from the Veerangal Odai present near Velachery MRTS station. The odai (meaning canal in English) has its origin at the Adambakkam canal, runs along Adambakkam and Puzhuthivakkam and gets emptied at last in Pallikarnai. Speaking to the officials, they said they already cleared a large portion of hyacinth.

There have been several complaints on the increasing mosquito menace in areas including Ram Nagar, Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam, etc. The city corporation was requested to remove water hyacinth on identifying Veerangal Odai as the major cause that serves as the breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Further to the clearance works, the water body is now free from major hyacinth and it has become smoother in flow of water. With this, there is a considerable decrease in number of complaints received from the residents. A good portion of the canal is also included in the Kovilambakkam Panchayat and it has agreed to take necessary clearance step.
