Report: TN likely to experience 8522 MW power shortage in 2020

Five years down the line from now, Tamil Nadu may have to experience power shortage of nearly 8500 MW, alerts Central Electricity Board to the southern electricity boards. They have furthermore stated that in southern states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Pudhuchery, the total power shortage would be around 21,000 MW.

The Central Electricity Board made a detailed study on the demand for power in each one of the state and has now announced the reports. According to the reports, states in the southern part of India is likely to face power shortage of the range 21,000 MW out of which Tamil Nadu will experience 8522 MW shortage. The reports were submitted to the respective electricity boards of all states as alarming note.

The report also added that the power shortage will keep increasing its range from currently existing 6688 MW to 21000 MW in another five years.

Below are the expected ranges of power shortage in Tamil Nadu:
  • Shortage of 4375 MW in 2015
  • Shortage of 4137 MW in 2016
  • Shortage of 4683 MW in 2017
  • Shortage of 5932 MW in 2018
  • Shortage of 7107 MW in 2019
  • Shortage of 8522 MW in 2020
