With the onset of south-west monsoon in Kerala, the Central Government Geographical Science State Minister, Mr. Jitendra Singh released the details on monsoon forecast.

He informed that the rainfall this year will be less than average. However, there would be no great harm caused by the El Nino phenomenon.

Between June & September, the rainfall during the south-west monsoon will be 93 to 96%.  This is less than the average. There may be less rain in some places. The rainfall may increase from 93% in June to 96% in August.

Because of the El Nino phenomenon, the temperature will increase in the Pacific Sea region causing less rainfall. However, this would not affect the rainfall in India.

Mr. Ramanan, Director, Chennai Meteorological Centre informed:

A depression has formed in the Bay of Bengal. This may intensify and move towards north or northwest. This depression has absorbed the humidity from the Bay of Bengal, there were rains in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallr. There may be rains in other regions including Pondicherry for the next 2 days.
