Aiming to help people cross busy city roads, escalator-equipped foot over-bridges were inaugurated in five places across the city. This unfortunately leaves the elderly troubled without being able to use them due to escalophobia, fear of using escalators.
Speaking to one of the commuters aged 57, he describes the experience as a terrifying one. While climbing steps is tedious, these moving steps are terrific. I’d choose the former rather to opt the latter, he says.
Study reports state that out of the total world’s population, nearly 0.03 per cent people suffer from escalaphobia. The phobia list also has bathnophobia – fear of stairs, climacophobia – fear of climbing, acrophobia – fear of heights, etc.
To note, the cost of these escalator supported over-bridges was 30.8 and it was over Rs 18 lakh rupees for purchase and installation of a single escalator.
The escalator saves more energy and time, but people fail to understand it, says an engineer who is a regular user of the escalator near MEPZ.
