Experts have shared their opinions to control water pollution in Chennai city. The city has drainage systems along the roads. While pipelines carrying drinking water are laid at a depth of 2 feet in one side of the road, water is to be supplied to houses on either side. This being the case, there is no trouble in supplying water to houses in that side of road which lies nearby the pipeline. However, when the water supply is to be carried to houses in opposite side, it has to crossover the drainage system.
In the earlier stages, iron pipelines were used to carry water. This created issues due to rusting over prolonged use. However, several control measures were taken and the issue is brought under control. Despite this, there are troubles with supplying water in certain places of the city. Speaking to one of the senior officials at the department, she says plastic pipelines were used as replacement for iron ones in the period 1990-2000.
To get out of the pollution trouble, it is recommended to create satellite cities in the suburban areas of the city and reduce the population by a significant level, say experts.
