HAC Prasad, Senior Economic Advisor, Union Ministry of Finance on Thursday participated in an interactive meeting on ‘the Economic survey – 2009-2010 and the state of economy organized by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  He was commentating that the Economic Survey had over last two years turned bold. He said that the emergence of double digit food inflation was of major concern. The Centre will liaise with seven or eight research institutes in the country to source intellectual and research inputs for the annual Economic Survey, He said.

Quoting from a report, Mr. Prasad said that India and China helped world economy to recover from the global recession. Even during recession, exports from Special Economic Zones grew by 50 per cent.

During 2009 (January to June) India`s share in merchandise export reached 1.2 per cent from 1.1 per cent in 1990, while China grew by 8.9 per cent in 2008 against 1.8 per cent in 1990 and this called for tapping the huge potential. Jawahar Vadivelu, SICCI vice-president wondered why India failed to see itself as an exporting nation and what were the policies needed to achieve it.

It is the political will that is required to make this nation a self reliant and powerful. Fundamental to that are  increasing food production , purchase of oil at competitive prices[from our point of view] or increase  production of  oil , improve power generation and infrastructure , make the land attractive to investment by  foreigners and encourage exports by all means  and reduce imports and finally stop giving freebies to people which spoils people.
