A multi-storeyed building in Mugalivakkam near Porur collapsed on Saturday (28th June). 72 persons were caught in the debris.
With the rescue operations starting immediately, some persons have been rescued; also, several bodies were retrieved. Suspecting some more persons trapped in the debris, rescue operations are continuing in full swing.
Today (Tuesday, 1st June), 2 more persons have been rescued and taken immediately by ambulance for for medical treatment. Rescue operations continue.
The rescue team includes 750 policemen, 360 fire-fighting operators, and 400 National Disaster rescue team members.
In order to administer immediate medical attention for the rescued persons who are severely hurt, a team of 30 doctors and nurses are ready.
However, the death toll in the building collapse has raised to 28. The rescue operations have been continued day & night. One person, Mr. Magesh from Andhra Pradesh, was rescued this early morning. Another 2 persons including Ms. Anusuya were rescued by the National disaster rescue team.
The rescue operations have continued non-stop for the last 4 days & 3 nights. Foul odour has started coming from the trapped dead. The rescue team fears that some more dead could be trapped to be retrieved.
