New Technology to be introduced in buses to avoid travelling on footboards!

In order to prevent accidents due to footboard travelling in buses, ‘a door protection equipment’ will be installed.

Chennai Metro Bus Corporation has 100 air- conditioned buses, 100 mini-buses and 3750 buses plying in 802 routes.

Various steps have been taken to modernise the bus transportation.

Due to heavy rush & crowding inside the buses, the public and the school/college students are compelled to travel standing on footboards in the buses. This has the danger of the passengers slipping and falling down from the bus. More than 400 deaths are reported every year due to this.

To prevent such accidents, MTC installed automatic closing doors 4 years ago. This brought down the number of deaths due to such accidents.

In order to totally prevent passengers from travelling on the footboards and to prevent passengers rising on the footboards without buying tickets, a new technology, ‘door protection equipment’, is being installed in 7 buses for testing. These are installed in the buses (D52, C51, 29C, 21H) plying from Adyar & Thirvanmiyur depots.

This equipment is installed in the brake system of the bus. This will ensure that the bus doors will be open only when the brakes are applied. Also, only after the passengers get inside the bus and the doors are closed,  the driver can move the bus.  This system will ensure safer travel.

It is gathered that some students from a private engineering college near Chennai have invented this technology which will prevent footboard travelling especially by school & college students. They have given detailed explanation of the operation of this system. As a trial, 7 buses in the city have been fitted with this equipment. Public opinion has been sought.

Based on the public feedback, a decision will be taken whether to fit this equipment in all buses.
