There used to be regular supply of onions transported from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra to the wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu, Chennai. However, during the recent period, onion was supplied only from the state of Maharashtra leading to a steep rice in the price of onion.
Recently, supply of onion has started coming from the state of Andhra Pradesh also. This has led to a reduction in price of onion.
As a result, onion which was sold at a price of Rs. 35/- to Rs. 40/- peer kg till 3 days ago has come down to be sold at Rs. 35/- to Rs. 30/- per kg.
Small onions are being sold at Rs. 25/- per kg. As the supply of onion has started increasing, it is expected that the price of onion will reduce further.
Supply of onion from Karnataka is also expected to resume and with supply from 3 states, the price of onion can reduce even further.
