There has been a sudden rise in the prices of all vegetables in Chennai.
One of the most-used vegetables in house-hold cooking, tomato was being sold at Rs.60/- per kg yesterday (14th July).
However, as tomato was sold at Rs. 60/- per kg at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market today (15th July), it was sold at Rs. 65/- per kg in most shops outside Koyambedu.
The wholesale dealers explained that the price rise of tomato was due to the fact that there was no supply of tomatoes from North Arcot, and Krishnagiri districts. Most of the tomatoes are transported only from Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka.
A box of tomato weighing 15 kg is sold at Rs. 630/-. Estimating that at least 2 kg of the vegetable are likely to be damaged, the prices are fixed keeping this 2 kg loss in mind.
Beans was sold at Rs. 100/- per kg. Flat beans was sold at Rs. 70 per kg, carrot at Rs. 50, okra (Lady’s finger) at Rs. 40/-, bitter gourd at Rs. 60/-, ivy gourds (Kovaikkai) at Rs. 40/-, and brinjal at Rs. 48/- per kg. Only cabbage was selling at a relatively cheaper price of Rs. 24/- per kg.
Thus, all vegetable prices have gone up.
