The state government has stepped in to make use of the vast space lying unutilized at MRTS stations in the city. A two-storey office complex will be built at Velacherry MRTS station at an estimated Rs 40 crore.
The chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced the plan in the state assembly on Tuesday.
The move is expected to come as a fillip to the railways’ attempts to have commercial outlets in the vast station building. If office space comes up, contractors could evince interest in bidding for commercial spots inside the station to set up food and beverages and retail stalls.
