Smart cards (E-family cards) before December – Announcement in Legislative Assembly!

Tamil Nadu State Food minister, Mr. Ra. Kamaraj, announced in the legislative assembly that smart cards (electronic cards for the families) will be distributed before December.

While answering a question on subsidy request by the department of food raised on Friday (18th July) in the legislative assembly, the minister informed:

As per the statistics until 30th June this year, the number of family cards under use amounts to 1,98,24,905.

In the last years, new family cards have been given to the families which produced all eligibility criteria amounting to 9,79,914.

Also, 2,85,717 fake family cards have been identified and removed.

Smart cards will replace the current family ration cards.

Statistics is being compiled under the National Census Board.

A unique identity number is given after taking all 10 fingerprints and the eyes and registering them. 

Once this work is completed, smart cards will be distributed as per this compilation.

Smart family cards can be distributed only after the completion of census work. If the state government has to it alone, it will cost Rs. 73 Crores.

Currently, census work has been completed 74%.

Smart cards are scheduled to be distributed before December.
