World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2010 in Chennai

The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers inaugurated the ‘World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2010’ here in  Chennai D.Varadarajan, Chief General Manager, BSNL Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle Inaugurated the event and delivered presidential address.. He said that the Information, Communication and Technology [ICT] could be a very useful tool in solving a many urban issues. Several speakers on Monday advocated widespread use of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) to address issues such as carbon emission, transport problems and to achieve sustainable healthcare. The widespread use of ICT had resulted in new public and private markets, shorter innovation cycles and faster responses to key socio-economic changes.

Pointing out that ICT had contributed to more than 40 per cent of overall productivity growth, he said that it had reshaped the world.“ India can shine only when we can bring rural areas and the disadvantaged into the mainstream…BSNL is in the path and will play an important role in meeting the objectives. In fact, BSNL has started deployment of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GEPON) equipment towards making high speed broadband a reality,” he said. Better life cannot be achieved without narrowing the digital divide. To narrow down the digital divide, he suggested providing ICT to poor and marginal people; promoting use of local language and free public internet booth for poor families with Smart BPL cards.Gitakrishnan Ramadurai, professor, IIT Madras, said that they were working on advanced traveler information system in and around their campus to reduce traffic congestion, to improve safety and air quality. The information system would be set up in one or two years.
