After two years of proposal of the idea, now, the state government has approached railways and urban development ministry requesting to allow Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to take over the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). The idea aims at integrating the rail-based transport of the city for easier transportation of commuters.
The proposal is now taken under consideration by the railway board, which was earlier proposed by CMRL after a comprehensive study of urban transportation. The results of the study identified that the MRTS is poorly linked to the bus routes and there were no adequate services.
If CMRL takes over MRTS, the old system will get entirely renovated with a new shot of all modern stations in the city, and passengers will have better facilities. According to officials, when a single parent agency takes care of both metro rail as well as MRTS, it will be better to have frequent services and meet passenger demands.
