CMDA has imposed new restrictions for approval construction plans (drawings) and construction completion certificates.

Recently, a 11-storeyed under construction in Moulivakkam  collapsed on 28th June leading to the loss of 61 lives.

Following this, as ordered by Tamil Nadu government, CMDA is conducting the inspection of all buildings under construction in Chennai city & suburbs.

All building recently certified for construction, all buildings under construction, and the maps submitted for approval are being investigated by CMDA.

CMDA has imposed restrictions on issue of approval for construction of multi-storeyed buildings and the approval and issue of construction completion certificates. As per this, all applications for the plan approval should furnish complete details including the details of the structural engineers in a special form.

A thorough inspection will be carried out by CMDA officials before the issue of construction completion certificates.

So far, no analysis is conducted on the design presented in the submission of approval plans. The procedure is for CMDA to issue approval under the condition that the structural engineers of the construction company will be solely responsible for damages, if any. With the new restriction, CMDA expects that there would be no violations of construction norms.

However, after the Moulivakkam incident, CMDA’s team of structural engineers will visit the construction site for a thorough check before issue of construction completion certificate.
