Today morning a fire gutted two rooms on the second floor of the Southern Railway headquarters, a heritage building, in Chennai.The blaze that started at 3.45am was put out by fire and rescue services before it spread to other rooms. Five fire tenders were used in the operation.
Two rooms of personnel department where files containing attendance of employees were gutted. Files, computers and furniture were destroyed. Since it was a minor fire the fire department were able to put it out quickly.
The reason for the fire accident was not known, but sources said it could be sabotage as it was suspected that attendance records of employees might have got destroyed in the accident. Railways recently made it mandatory that employees should report for duty at 9.15am, after an instruction from the Union government.
