The second
edition of the National Handloom Expo got under way at Valluvar Kottam here on
Saturday. Products from various States including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,
Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand,
Assam, Maharashtra
and Tamil Nadu are on display at 124 stalls. Exhibitors include State handloom
corporations, apex societies, primary cooperative societies, self-help groups,
handloom clusters and government institutions such as Handloom Export Promotion
Council, Textiles Committee, and Jute Board. The 18-day exhibition, open from
11 a.m. to 8 p.m., for cutomers, is a platform to check out innovations by
weavers from across the country, there is something for weavers too. With the
aim of taking handloom to a newer plane, the Weavers` Service Centre, Chennai,
would also be organizing a technical workshop on July 14, said B.B. Paul, South
Zone director of the Centre, which along with the National Handloom Development
Corporation, Lucknow, has organised the exhibition. The workshop would be held
at Bala Mandir German Hall, T. Nagar. “About 100 handloom weavers from across
the State are participating.
