Coimbatore looks colorful and fragrant with tons of flowers filling the market. With Onam festival nearing by, the market carries 200 tonnes of variety of flowers to allow people decorate their houses for the eve of the floral carnival.
In general, the market receives only 30 tonnes of flowers every day, but now, it has more than 170 tonnes of flowers including rose, jasmine, champas, marigolds, and more. The market seems to have turned exclusive for Malayalam-speaking people.
Just as the volume of flowers is increased, the flower price is increased too. A 40 per cent hike in rates is seen with these flowers. Speaking to the treasurer of Coimbatore Flower Market Association (CFMA), he says orange and yellow Sendumalli are priced Rs 60 per kilo which used to be Rs 40 on regular days.
These are flowers that dominate the poo kolams on Onam eve. This counts to 40 per cent increase in rate, he added. Chrysanthemum (common samanthi) is priced between Rs 80 and Rs 200 per kilo depending on the quality of flower.
